Root planing is a deep-cleaning procedure that smooths the root surfaces of the teeth after tartar and bacteria have been removed from below the gumline. It is usually carried out together with scaling.
A smoother root surface makes it harder for bacteria to attach and allows the gums to heal and reattach more closely to the teeth. It is commonly used for patients with periodontitis.
